First, it is important to create your concept statement. The most challenging part is to know how to keep it concise yet detailed enough to get your point through.

An example of a concept statement of one of my past project was, “This brand will be the push that many busy professionals, beginners or couch potatoes from diverse backgrounds are searching for. It will motivate you to follow a healthy lifestyle by helping the user make realistic and enjoyable fitness goals. It will teach you that no excuses can come in between you and your health. It will include all details on diet plans, calorie counter, recipes, exercises to do with or without machines and without taking too much of your time. It will also allow individuals to take part in playful challenges with their friends by tracking their exercise and diet to empower each other.”

Once you have your concept statement, it is time to start creating multiple moodboards to visualize your idea. Mood boards are important to quickly create a visual that would describe your brand including images and typography.

More important than moodboards, will be your style tiles. They are critical because before creating a high fidelity prototype which takes time, we can create multiple style tiles to show the client different visuals which includes color palette, typography, hierarchy showing headings & body, iconography and images. These are able to give the client a feeling of how the final brand would look and feel like. They helped establish a direct connection with interface elements without defining layout.

Once you pick a direction from your style tiles, then you are able to start working on the actual layout of the product. This is done by creating something called wireframes. I will talk about them next time. Stay tuned!
